"All the days of the afflicted are evil..."

"All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast." (Proverbs 15:15) The first time I encountered the above passage, I tried to reflect on many other alternate meanings there could be asides from what comes to mind at first glance. But there's no getting away from the obvious: your life is shaped by your perspective.  The interesting thing about affliction is that it is typically no respecter of persons. Young or old, rich or poor, healthy or sick - it is an equal opportunity offender. It takes different forms: financial, spiritual, mental, physical, the list goes on. There are the severe, life-threatening types, and the garden-variety types that show up as daily or weekly inconveniences. But there is a flavor of affliction for every kind of person: many fall into the thinking trap that there's a level of wealth or security that guarantees an affliction-free existence. Eleven Wise Sayings (proverbs) From The 3rd Chapter of Proverbs



1. Hold on to both mercy and truth, operate in balance - this brings favor and understanding from both God and man (verses 3-4)


2. Trust in the LORD with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding. Acknowledge Him in all your ways, and Heā€™ll direct your paths (verses 5-6)


3. Donā€™t be wise in your own eyes - fear God and depart from evil (verse 7)


4. Honor God with your substance, and with the first fruits of your increase (verse 9)


5. Donā€™t despise Godā€™s chastening, donā€™t be weary of His correction. Itā€™s those God loves He corrects (verses 11-12)


6. Keep sound wisdom and judgement, theyā€™ll be life to your soul and grace to your neck (verses 21-22)


7. Donā€™t be afraid of sudden fear and destroying of the wicked when it comes. God knows how to keep you and protect you from falling (verses 25-26)


8. Donā€™t withhold good from those it is due, when it is in your power to do it. Donā€™t say ā€œgo and come back tomorrow, and Iā€™ll give it to youā€, when you have it right beside you (verses 27-28)


9. Donā€™t plan evil against your neighbor, he relies on you for safety (verse 29)


10. Donā€™t be angry or fight with someone without cause, when they have done nothing wrong to you to deserve it (verse 30)


11. Donā€™t envy the cruel person, and choose none of their ways (verse 31)
