Is God greater than all your problems?
There was a Christian song popular when I was growing up, and it went like this:
♭ He's greater than all my problems
Greater than all my needs
My God is bigger than any problem
I can or cannot see
Lovely song and lyrics that echo a mantra common in many Christian congregations. Even if you never sang the song, you have heard this or 'Amen-ed' on this.
But is this something we really believe? All the time?
Many times we Christians fall into the trap of magnifying our problems above God. And that's a real PROBLEM.
When sins are discussed, most of the time it's about ACTIONS. Of things done, or things failed to be done. But is also possible to sin against God in ATTITUDE.
As Christians, one of the most common sins of ATTITUDE we commit is undermining God. We underrate Him. We buy into the notion that His hand is too short, that there are burdens He can bear, and others we have to bear by ourselves.
We fall into the trap of elevating our fears over His power. We say things like “God, I know you are strong, but on this particular issue my limitations are more than what your power can handle”.
That was the attitude Moses displayed at the burning bush that made God angry with him. Moses elevated his speech impediment and said he could not deliver the message God gave him because of his stammer (Exodus 4:10-11).
Or we put limitations on what our faith can accomplish. We say things like “I can pray for this hill, but for this mountain, I cannot. I will need a more spiritually powerful person to help me pray for that one”. Even though Jesus likened the faith to move mountains to the size of a mustard seed.
This was what made Jesus annoyed with his disciples when they could not cast out the demons from the boy whose father cried out (Mark 9:19).
God angry, Jesus annoyed. That should tell you that the attitude of limiting the power of God is a serious issue.
We need to get back to magnifying the Lord. Not just with our lips, in worship lyrics, but in our hearts. In our thinking. In our processing of life issues. In our communication with others.
We limit the light that is in us when we limit the application of the power of God.
Residing in us is Power. Power that can not only transform our lives but our families, our society, and the world. But that power lies latent. We must activate it, and the only way to do so is by magnifying the One whose power works in us.
We started this post with an old-time song, and another old-time song comes to mind as the Call to Action for this message:
I have made you too small in my eyes
O Lord, forgive me
And I have believed in the lies
That you are unable to help me
But now, O Lord, I see my faults
Heal my heart, and show yourself strong
And in my eyes, and with my song
O Lord, be magnified (x2)
