"All the days of the afflicted are evil..."

"All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast." (Proverbs 15:15) The first time I encountered the above passage, I tried to reflect on many other alternate meanings there could be asides from what comes to mind at first glance. But there's no getting away from the obvious: your life is shaped by your perspective.  The interesting thing about affliction is that it is typically no respecter of persons. Young or old, rich or poor, healthy or sick - it is an equal opportunity offender. It takes different forms: financial, spiritual, mental, physical, the list goes on. There are the severe, life-threatening types, and the garden-variety types that show up as daily or weekly inconveniences. But there is a flavor of affliction for every kind of person: many fall into the thinking trap that there's a level of wealth or security that guarantees an affliction-free existence. That simply doesn't happen: it's one of the co...

The battle is in the mind, but the weapon is the Word

All of life starts from the spiritual. Whatever is observed in the physical started in the spiritual. Resist the deception of the devil to label this as an unintellectual perspective.

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue..." (Proverbs 18:21a). The devil has many Christians deceived into shaping unfruitful and damning future states with their words under the guise of 'stating the facts' and 'accepting the reality'. When they do this, they lose sight of the power of the God that saved Him and move their focus from the only One with the power to change their situation.

Ask yourself: what benefit has 'stating the facts' about a system ever yielded? Every teenager that has been told they are good for nothing usually gets worse; every country whose citizens constantly declare it as failed usually ends up a failed state; every relationship that is verbally given up on will usually fall apart. Stating the facts only reinforces the status quo and limits the opportunity to introduce a Power that can change it for the better.

Let no one deceive you: words have the power to change things. The world we live in - all we see and sense - was brought forth by the words of the mouth of God (2 Peter 3:5). We are saved into everlasting life by the confession of our mouth (Romans 10:9). Words have transforming power.

2Cor 4:13 "...Having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak" Our words are a reflection of what we believe. What do we believe? Do we believe God has the power to intervene, to turn situations around? Do we believe He is active in this world and can be called on to transform situations? Have we bought the lie that other influences have become more powerful than God in this world? If not - if we believe He can change things - then we must magnify Him by speaking His word over the circumstances in our lives and world. We must declare His sovereignty and speak words that establish His will for us and our lives.

So what words do we speak then in response to life's issues? Let's take some examples:

Are recent tumultuous events getting you worried about the future? Be encouraged and declare Psalm 46:1-2 "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea"

Are you struggling with your Christian walk, find yourself falling more than standing, and worrying if you can get it right with God? Remember and verbally confess Philippians 1:6 "Being confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in me will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ"

Do you worry that God will get tired and annoyed with your falls and struggles and abandon you, or fall out of love with you? Romans 8:38-39 is your reminder "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Are you tormented with thoughts or ideations of untimely and tragic death? Speak the word of God in Psalm 118:17 "I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord."

Do you have a big responsibility (a new project, a job promotion, parenthood, etc.) in front of you and are wondering how you will be able to do it well? Your declaration is "And God is able to make all grace abound towards me, that I, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work" (2 Corinthians 9:8) and "I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me (Philippians 4:13)

Do you worry about provision and having enough to meet your needs? Be encouraged in Psalm 23: and declare "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me besides still waters, He restores my soul." Also in Philippians 4:19 and confess "My God will supply all my needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus".

Are you passing through a challenging season and wondering if your problems will overcome you? Remind yourself of God's assurance of His protecting presence in Isaiah 43:2 "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee."

Declaration and confession is not a one-time act, it is to be done continuously. Keep speaking God's word over your life and your circumstances.
