"All the days of the afflicted are evil..."

"All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast." (Proverbs 15:15) The first time I encountered the above passage, I tried to reflect on many other alternate meanings there could be asides from what comes to mind at first glance. But there's no getting away from the obvious: your life is shaped by your perspective.  The interesting thing about affliction is that it is typically no respecter of persons. Young or old, rich or poor, healthy or sick - it is an equal opportunity offender. It takes different forms: financial, spiritual, mental, physical, the list goes on. There are the severe, life-threatening types, and the garden-variety types that show up as daily or weekly inconveniences. But there is a flavor of affliction for every kind of person: many fall into the thinking trap that there's a level of wealth or security that guarantees an affliction-free existence. That simply doesn't happen: it's one of the co...

"Let us come boldly..."

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:16)

This is a message I know is for someone out there.

You've known Christ - or at least have been known by His label, as a Christian - for all or some parts of your life.

And you know it's been a moment (a year? a decade? a lifetime?) since you approached His throne of grace.

A moment since you've sought Him on your own and, through thanksgiving and supplication, laid out your pressing need and the burdens on your heart.

You want to approach, but different thoughts are in your head.

"I don't even know how to pray - how can I approach?"

"It's been so long, what if He doesn't even recognize me?"

"I've done things He commanded me not to, what if He throws me out?"

"My issues are too complex, my burdens are beyond human definitions, my fears are beyond what can even be uttered. What if He can't help me?"

"Approaching the Throne is what big-time, perfect, spiritual, tongue-talking, Holy Ghost believers do. Me I'm not perfect. I'm going to wait here till I see one of the big folks heading over, and hand my prayer list over to them"

"I've approached before, and I didn't get what I asked for / forgot to ask / squandered the opportunity. Can I try again?"

Boldness and confidence are just not traits that we cultivate naturally. Even society is primed to stand in the way of the bold, and warn them of the risks involved in their mission. We also have an interesting relationship with asking. We worry that our requests may be too frequent, too burdensome, and we don't want to be a bother.

But God wants us to come, and He wants us to ask. "Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need".

A thought that weighs heavy on my mind is what we could, all, potentially be missing out on the other side of fear. What benefits could be waiting to be unlocked, what long-awaited blessings could be waiting to be bestowed. What could be waiting unused just because we didn't take Christ up on His Ask-Seek-Knock charge ("Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." - Matthew 7:7)

I don't know who you are, but here's a reminder that God is waiting for you. He wants you to come. His Son has paid the price, shed the blood (Ephesians 2:18). The only access code here is "Just believe" (Hebrews 11:6). Don't accept any more of the devil's lies that He doesn't want you to come, or that you can't come, or that He can't help you. The wonderful things are on the other side of seeking God. He has said "And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart." (Jeremiah 29:13).

"For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him." (2 Chronicles 16:9)

Again, this message is for someone God wants you to come. If you've already approached and experienced this grace don't keep this to yourself: share this message so that yet one more person will receive the strength to approach the throne of grace. God bless you.
