Blue Letter Bible

God and me

When a person introduces themselves as a Christian, what is usually implied (across traditional Christian circles) is that this person has a direct relationship with God. A Father and child relationship.

But there are many whose relationship is by name only. This is not ideal because God is desirous of a relationship with all of His children. He wants them to draw near and know Him (John 17:3).

Does any of the below describe your current relationship with God?

  • You cannot consult God for yourself when making significant decisions - you have to wait for others to go and consult God, and come back with the results for you.
  • Prayer time scares you or is a burden to you - five minutes into prayer you have either tuned out or figured God was not listening and went off to do something else.
  • Your Christianity is a burden - obeying the commands of God is a tiresome chore, and you view the Christian lifestyle as a dull one with no rewards in sight.
  • The peace and joy Jesus talks so freely about for His disciples is alien to you.
  • The love for the brethren is an alien concept to you. Showing love to others outside your comfortable circle of friends is a burdensome task.
  • In spite of all you have heard about the love of God and His love nature, something about Him still scares you and keeps you far away from developing a relationship with Him for yourself.
  • Your Christian walk is 'here today, gone tomorrow'. You find yourself head-over-heels in love with God and rock-sure of His faithfulness to you one day and then down-in-the-dumps, battered and unsure the next.
  • You have become hardened with cynicism about how the world is and how the church is today that you meet every spark of optimism or hope with the words, "Can anything good come out of ... "?
  • Because of certain circumstances, you are left wondering if there is a loving God still up there and whether you have fallen so far away from His favor to deserve what has happened to you.

If any of the above describes you, then you need something new. You need God to change your perspective. You need Him to open your eyes, to see that the Christian walk is the most prestigious calling, that the power that saved you and the blood that washed you are incomparable and matchless. That you are loved and chosen by a Father so great, kind, and loving. That there is far more to life than what is just visible, that God's power can move even the most impossible of situations.

You need Him to open your eyes and see the immense power He has made available for you to tap into, so that you can live victoriously, abounding in grace and good works.

Hold on to God, bring your situation to Him, and allow Him to mend the breaches in your soul, so you can cultivate that “God and me” relationship.

“For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers,
that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him,

having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,

and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might
Ephesians 1: 15-19
