"All the days of the afflicted are evil..."

"All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart hath a continual feast." (Proverbs 15:15) The first time I encountered the above passage, I tried to reflect on many other alternate meanings there could be asides from what comes to mind at first glance. But there's no getting away from the obvious: your life is shaped by your perspective.  The interesting thing about affliction is that it is typically no respecter of persons. Young or old, rich or poor, healthy or sick - it is an equal opportunity offender. It takes different forms: financial, spiritual, mental, physical, the list goes on. There are the severe, life-threatening types, and the garden-variety types that show up as daily or weekly inconveniences. But there is a flavor of affliction for every kind of person: many fall into the thinking trap that there's a level of wealth or security that guarantees an affliction-free existence. That simply doesn't happen: it's one of the co...

The LovingKindness of God - Psalm 107

 šŸŽ¶šŸŽµO that men would praise the Lord

For His goodness and for His wonderful works

 to the children of menšŸŽµšŸŽ¶

The title of this post is a repeated strain in the 107th Psalm and oh what a wonderful message it relays to us about our glorious God.

ā€œO That Men Would Praise the Lordā€ is repeated multiple times in Psalm 107, because it tells the tale of four dire circumstances that humans put themselves in (or finds themselves in) in which God intervened, showed mercy and brought deliverance. And Heā€™s the same God yesterday, today and forever - His lovingkindness is the same.

Lovingkindness is an unusual word: itā€™s not an adjective used to describe humans, even the nicest ones. Itā€™s one thing to be loving, and itā€™s another thing to be kind. But the Almighty and Holy God chooses to be described as being ā€œwith lovingkindnessā€. And thatā€™s an amazing fact.

The Psalm is the full message: no postscript required. Please read and be reminded of the lovingkindness of our great and mighty God (Psalm 107:43).

Circumstance 1: The lost and hungry wanderers

ā€œThey wandered in the wilderness in a solitary way;

They found no city to dwell in.

Hungry and thirsty, Their soul fainted in them.

Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble,

And he delivered them out of their distresses.

And he led them forth by the right way,

That they might go to a city of habitation.ā€

Circumstance 2: The rebellious yet afflicted prisoners

 ā€œSuch as sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,

Being bound in affliction and iron;

Because they rebelled against the words of God,

And contemned the counsel of the Most High:

Therefore he brought down their heart with labour;

They fell down, and there was none to help.

Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble,

And he saved them out of their distresses.

He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,

And brake their bands in sunder.ā€

Circumstance 3: The tormented sinners

 ā€œFools because of their transgression,

And because of their iniquities, are afflicted.

Their soul abhorreth all manner of meat;

And they draw near unto the gates of death.

Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble,

And he saveth them out of their distresses.

He sent his word, and healed them,

And delivered them from their destructions.ā€

Circumstance 4: The storm-tossed travellers

ā€œThey that go down to the sea in ships,

That do business in great waters;

These see the works of the LORD,

And his wonders in the deep.

For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind,

Which lifteth up the waves thereof.

They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: Their soul is melted because of trouble.

They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, And are at their wits' end.

He maketh the storm a calm,

So that the waves thereof are still.

Then are they glad because they be quiet;

So he bringeth them unto their desired haven.ā€
